Top Grocer Picks: Delimondo Corned Beef

2 Oct

I am not so fond of corned beef, but I have to make an exception just for this one. I know processed food is not so healthy, but sometimes when I have cravings for something salty, I reach for DeliMondo Corned Beef from the grocery shelf. This has become my go-to comfort food. It only comes in two variants: Ranch Style, and Garlic and Chili. I personally like the Garlic and Chili because it is tastier, more flavorful, and just because I’m Bicolana, I really want the ZING!

What makes it so different from our all-time favorite Purefoods? I like the long shreds and big chunks of beef. And yes, it has that distinctive flavor that’s really unique to DeliMondo. The meat is juicier and tastier. The quality is really more premium and not commercial, therefore, price is also on the higher end. Per 380g can costs around P153. You can come across DeliMondo in Rustan’s branches, Metro Gaisano Supermarket, and S&R. This has been the brainchild of Katrina Ponce-Enrile, yes, of JPE clan.

I specially have it prepared by my cook/chef Yaya Tess with either sauteeing it in red or white onions depending on the taste I like for that day. I just have to pair it with tuyo, daing (Bisugo variety) and brown red rice. You can either have it with your fried or steamed white rice (I’m sure it is even more delicious and hearty), with crackers, wheat or white bread, or better yet, your hot pandesal!

So, go ahead… crave some today. You’ll get addicted, just like me! Enjoy…

5 Reasons Why I Am Crazy About Wildflour Cafe

18 Sep

Yes. I admit it. I love pastries. I love the smell of freshly baked bread. I love the taste of creamy sweet cakes. I love the sound of the crrrrunch and crrrisp whenever I bite into those dreamy croissants.

It is no wonder then that when I discovered Wildflour on my hunt for the legendary cronuts, I had to go back again and again to this tasteful cafe and bakery. No, it is not just because of the cronuts they are famous for, but also for its other wonders as well. (I have written a separate post about Wildflour’s cronuts here: Cronuts 101.)

Here are the 5 Reasons Why I Go Crazy Over Wildflour:

#1. Banana Nutella

This Danish pastry with real bananas and generous helping of nutella on top is to die for! For me, this is even BETTER than cronuts. I had to call in advance and make prior reservations for me to make sure I still have stock when I get to their store. Just like their cronuts, this beauty runs out faster than you can say its name. I buy a dozen and the kids and I consume this in just one day! A piece costs P120.

#2. Mushroom Salad

This salad is a mix of arugula, mushroom, shaved apples, pistachio, and fresh serving of shaved parmesan. I am not a big fan of arugula in my salad, but this one is definitely a huge exception! I can order two servings and make this as my complete lunch. This healthy treat costs P360.

#3. Croque Madam

This bestseller of a sandwich is just a mix of brioche, ham, gruyere, and fried egg. Cut into this goodness and take a yummy bite! Sometimes when I am really hungry, I can eat this on my own, no sharing please! This delicious popular sandwich costs P420.

#4. California Burger

This burger comes with caramelized onions, cheddar cheese and romaine lettuce, in a brioche bun served with the best tasting fries. I am also not a big fan of burgers, but yes, I made an exception on this one as well! I even finished the fries! A burger lover like my son would definitely pay P450 on this one.

#5. Freshly Baked Bread

While you wait for your orders, you can expect to be served with this delicious freshly baked bread. It is crrrunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. I always love to take home one of these.

Wildflour has easily put itself on top of my list of Top 5 Cafes in Metro Manila. They have 2 branches to go to: Podium and The Fort Bonifacio Global City. Make sure to phone in for seat and table reservations.

Oh and one more thing: when you dine in, you can opt to have a maximum of 2 pieces of cronuts on your table and you don’t have to fall in line just to order. Just one of the many ways Wildflour surprises me.

Cronuts 101: Manila’s Most Viral Dessert

31 Jul

cronuts ansel

Described by many as a half croissant, half doughnut — this pastry hybrid invented by New York’s Dominique Ansel is taking the world by storm. After its launch last May 2013, Cronut fans spanned the whole world, making it the most viral dessert item to date.

This doughnut-meets-croissant treat is an over-the-top pastry made of flaky croissant dough that is deep fried, then injected with cream or jam and topped with icing. Copycats have already been spotted and are riding with the wave here in Metro Manila.

Here are three I have recently discovered:

1. Wildflour

cronuts wildflour

My three kids and I trooped to this high-end Manila bakery cafe, Wildflour, in Podium to have a taste of this wonder dessert. I was not prepared for the long queue that met us. As I was lining up, I was really thinking out loud: “This better be worth it!” We were rewarded with the yummy waft of aroma as the freshly baked batch was delivered to our table. Wildflour has their own four version: Dulce de Leche, Vanilla, Chocolate, and Berry. My personal favorite is Chocolate, only because I’m a big fan of dark chocolate. Because of limited production, which comes only at 330pm, each customer is limited to 2 pieces. I let my eldest son, Miguel, line up with me so we can taste the 4 available variants. It retails at P120 each.

My verdict: too sweet and creamy for my taste.

2. Le Couer de France

Pancake House Group, Le Couer de France, is also riding with this trend. I snatched up three of their amazing “croughnuts”: Double Belgian, Mixed Berries, and Parmesan Cheese. It retails at P89 a piece.

My verdict: flaky and chewy, but surprisingly good!

3. Cha Time

cronuts cha time

Cha time’s version is a little bit smaller than its Manila counterparts. It has 4 flavors: Sugar Raised, Dark Chocolate, White Milk Chocolate, and Glazed. It retails at P55 each.

My verdict: flaky but not chewy, manageable size.

Here are some important things you need to know with our lovable dessert:

1. You MUST eat these immediately as they have a short shelf life.

2. And if you do cut, please use a serrated knife, so as not to crush the layers.

3. Never refrigerate these treats as the humidity from the refrigerator will cause them to go stale and soggy.

4. Since Cronuts are filled with cream, I do not recommend serving them warm.

Try to snatch up a few before they sell out! Enjoy!
